Introduction

The Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering is a comprehensive entry-level qualification designed to equip learners with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities required for a successful career in the engineering sector. Covering core principles across mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering disciplines, this diploma serves as a strong foundation for further study or direct employment in a range of technical and engineering roles. Ideal for aspiring engineers, the program emphasizes real-world application, technical accuracy, and industry-relevant competencies, ensuring learners are well-prepared to progress into higher education or an apprenticeship pathway within the engineering field.

Upon graduation, learners will earn:

Program Structure

Mandatory Modules

1. Engineering Principles (M/618/6101): 10 UK Credits/5 ECTS Credits.

  • Understand the foundational principles of engineering and their historical development.
  • Gain practical skills in applying SI units, performing calculations, and interpreting engineering information.

2. Design Technology (T/618/6102): 10 UK Credits/5 ECTS Credits.

  • Learn problem-solving approaches in design and material selection for engineering products.
  • Develop 2D CAD drawing skills and understand the systems approach to electrical design.

3. Electricity (A/618/6103): 10 UK Credits/5 ECTS Credits.

  • Understand AC and DC circuit theory and the role of electrical components in circuit design.
  • Explore power systems, including power supply and circuit protection.

4. Mechanics (F/618/6104): 10 UK Credits/5 ECTS Credits.

  • Analyze the motion of objects using mathematical principles and understand energy conservation.
  • Explore energy transfer, forces, and the properties of materials under stress.

5. Introducing Statistics (J/618/6105): 10 UK Credits/5 ECTS Credits.

  • Understand statistical concepts, data representation, and variability.
  • Learn to calculate and interpret statistical diagrams and measures for engineering applications.

6. Mathematics (L/618/6106): 10 UK Credits/5 ECTS Credits.

  • Apply algebra, geometry, and calculus to solve practical engineering problems.
  • Use exponentials, logarithms, and trigonometry in engineering contexts.
Assignments
  • Complete 6 written assignments (2,000–3,000 words each) based on the module titles.

Professional Certification

During the completion of learning modules, UKeU automated online learning system allows students to take competency assessments to obtain an e-Professional Certificate, which is integrated into the system as an optional feature. Students can request a hard copy if needed. The Professional Certificate provides a detailed record of the competencies the student has achieved.

Entry Requirements

Admission Requirements for Level 3 Foundation Program:

  1. Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
  2. Education: Completion of full secondary education is required.
  3. English Language Proficiency:
    • Applicants must demonstrate English language skills equivalent to:
      • IELTS: Overall score of 5.5, with Reading and Writing at 5.5.
      • CEFR: Level B2.
      • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): Score of 51.

Learning Method

Teaching and learning strategies:

The program is designed based on a self-study model with automated learning processes, following the STEP framework:

  1. (S) Self-Study – Independent learning through lectures and instructional videos.
  2. (T) Tutor – Watching tutorial videos or reading support materials to deepen understanding and learn how to develop assignments according to requirements.
  3. (E) Evidence – Completing required exercises to demonstrate competency.
  4. (P) Project – Conducting a capstone project or writing a graduation thesis.
